Toyota recently earned the IPO award for the third year in a row. IPO stands for the Intellectual Property Owners Association, an independent research association that publishes a yearly “Top 300 Organizations Granted US Patents.” Toyota has more patents—totaling 1,540 for 2016—than any other automaker, making it a leader in its industry.Top Automotive Innovator - Bill Walsh Toyota - Ottawa, IL

According to Toyota, several of these patents were filed with the creation of innovations like Toyota Safety Sense™, a suite of driver assist technologies that alerts you to dangers on the road. Entune 3.0 also utilized several new technologies, while Toyota also optimized hybrid and alternative-fuel options for several vehicles.

“As companies in the automotive industry transform themselves into broader mobility providers, no auto company better demonstrates innovation and technology for the future than Toyota,” said Jeff Makarewicz, group vice president, Toyota Motor North America Research & Development.  “Toyota’s industry-leading patent numbers illustrate the company’s continuous success as global mobility and innovation front runner.”

Toyota FT-4X Concept

Toyota LogoThere are quite a few utility-driven vehicles getting released in the next few years and Toyota isn’t about to be left out of the running. The Japanese automaker announced that it would bring a new off-road concept to the New York International Auto Show. The concept, called the FT-4X, will offer the off-road capability that weekend adventurers love while maintaining urban versatility.

The Toyota FT-4X concept is widely considered to be the replacement for the FJ Cruiser, which left the market in 2014. Now, crossovers and SUVs are all the rage amid low gas prices. With close competitors releasing their own off-road utility vehicles, Toyota is clearly looking to grab its fair share of the market.

The FT-4X name stands for “Future Toyota – Four-Wheel Drive” and a teaser photo reveals just what that means. The concept vehicle rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in 225/55R18 tires. Obviously a four-wheel drive model, the teaser photo shows that the display model will likely be bright orange.

While speculators believe this could be the successor to the FJ Cruiser, others are holding out in the hopes of a crossover or small truck. The Toyota FT-4X concept will make its public debut on April 12th at the New York International Auto Show.

We here at Bill Walsh Toyota can’t wait to see what comes from the inspiring FT-4X Concept!

45 Toyota Cars at NAIAS 2017, Including C-HR and New Camry

2018 Toyota Camry Announced At NAIAS 2-17

The North American International Auto Show ( NAIAS 2017 ) is still going on for a few more days, and by the end Toyota will have shown 45 vehicles. The big story is the new generation of the Camry, Toyota’s flagship sedan, as well as the C-HR crossover coupe that has been making its way around US auto shows in the last year before finally stopping in Detroit.

The 2018 Camry

The eighth-generation Camry, which will go on sale with 2018 models, was built on the TNGA, or “Toyota New Global Architecture,” which was also used in the new Toyota Innova Crysta and the Fortuner, and utilizes sharp, bold styling and defined lines for sporty, aggressive looks.

The Camry’s new sloping roof and sleek profile give a more luxurious impression than previous generations, which is matched by its superior driving dynamics, a redesigned cabin with seamlessly integrated touchscreen, and a unique center console.

The Camry Hybrid will also get a redesign, with some minor differences from the gasoline Camry, including a backlit blue Toyota symbol and a different grille. It will also include the next-generation Toyota Hybrid System.

 The 2018 C-HR

The C-HR is set to go on sale in 2018 as well. Originally meant to be part of the Scion lineup, the C-HR takes obvious design cues from the funky, youth-oriented Scion styles. Its deep curves and sharp lines perfectly combine the TNGA design philosophy with the crossover coupe style, giving Toyota a great contender for the subcompact SUV market.

Toyota Helps Open Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center

Spinal cord injuries can be some of the most life-changing injuries—causing many people to become paralyzed. Unfortunately, this happens all too frequently to some of our military veterans while fighting overseas. One veteran, Romy Camargo was paralyzed after a sniper’s bullet hit him in the neck.

After his injuries, he and his wife, Gaby, decided to help make the lives of other paraplegics and quadriplegics better by opening a spinal cord injury recovery center called Stay In Step.

Toyota donated $300,000 to help open the doors of the center in Tampa, Florida, that will be available to both veterans and civilians. In addition to the funds, Toyota donated a wheelchair-accessible 2015 Toyota Sienna minivan at the grand opening on June 20th.

“Supporting Stay In Step is aligned with Toyota’s corporate vision to lead the way to the future of mobility and enrich lives around the world with the safest and most responsible ways of moving people,” said Chief Administrative Officer Simon Nagata, in a statement. “Toyota is proud to support Stay In Step and the tremendous work of Romy and Gaby.”

Stay In Step will use intense strength and conditioning exercises to help patients on the road to recovery and will focus on a “never quit” mentality for its patients and families.

Wow! What amazing dedication from the Camargo family and Toyota to help people get back on their feet. You find more information online and make sure to visit us at Bill Walsh Toyota for all your Toyota needs.

Early Indications of a Sweeping Land Cruiser Update Starting to Surface

It would appear that the 2017 model year Toyota Land Cruiser is going to be getting a facelift. The rugged and reliable Land Cruiser will have some considerable changes based on a brochure circulated by Toyota with an image making its way around the Internet. The front end will receive all-new styling to include horizontal chrome accents, updated HID headlights with LED running lights, and smaller wide-set fog lights. The Land Cruiser update will encompass new unique alloy-wheels, different paint choices, shiny door handles, and new LED taillights.

The new updated interior is expected to anchor around an all-new touchscreen display infotainment center surrounded by a more sophisticated instrument cluster and a configurable TFT screen. Select markets should see a 2.8-liter diesel variant available, although details about that drivetrain coming to the US market have not come to light.

Although this update is still in the planning-phases, the current Land Cruiser and other dominant Toyota models are ready and waiting for you at Bill Walsh Toyota.

2016 Toyota Prius Engine Garners 40% Thermal Efficiency

Could the Prius be any more efficient? Well, according to Toyota, it can!

Recently announced at the Annual Spring Congress for Japan’s Society of Automotive Engineers, the 2016 Toyota Prius engine will boast 40% thermal efficiency, an increase of 1.5% over its previous model, making it the most efficient Prius to date. Early estimates speculate that the new Prius will be able to offer 60 mpg.

“The efficiency will be realized by improving the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) limit from 21 percent (current model) to 28 percent,” reports Nikkei Technology Online. “The thermal efficiency of 40 percent would be the world’s highest for a mass-produced gasoline engine.”

So just how was Toyota able to improve its thermal efficiency? According to the Japanese automaker, the increased thermal efficiency came from adjusting the intake port, recirculating more exhaust gases, and remodeling the shape of the piston.

The 2016 Toyota Prius is expected to be unveiled to the public this fall and will hit showrooms early next year. Until then, be sure to come visit our lineup of fuel-efficient vehicles at Bill Walsh Toyota today!

Toyota Turns Focus on Safety during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. For Toyota, that means it’s time to double down, not just on awareness, but on action as well. For the fourth straight year, Toyota and Discovery Education have partnered on the Toyota TeenDrive365 Video Challenge, which tasks teenage filmmakers to make short films that inspire safe driving practices. The videos are made by teenagers and aimed at a teenage audience as well.

The challenge received over 1,000 entries this year, but Toyota and Discovery Education recently narrowed the field down to ten finalists. After April 30, the winners of the First Place, Second Place, and Third Place awards will be named. First place comes with a $15,000 cash prize, with lesser cash prizes for the rest.

However, you, the loyal customers, have a chance to participate in the voting as well. From now until April 30, you can go online, watch all the finalists, and vote for your favorite. The video with the most votes will win the People’s Choice Award, which comes with a $5,000 cash prize and a visit to a Velocity network show.

“At Toyota we believe that when good ideas are shared great things can happen. We applaud the teens who entered the challenge to share their vision to improve safe driving among their peers,” said Michael Rouse, President of the Toyota U.S.A. Foundation.

To learn more about a brand that cares this much about teenage drivers and safety overall, come see us here at Bill Walsh Toyota. We’ll even tell you about the upcoming Toyota Safety Sense package, which will be used on small U.S. vehicles by 2017.

Battery Maintenance Tips to Start Car Care Month Out Right

Follow these battery maintenance tips!
Cleaning its tray goes a long way in keeping the battery secure.

April is Car Care Month, a time of the year to really pay attention to your car’s needs and make sure everything is running smoothly and effectively. One of the most important parts in any vehicle is that of the engine that keeps it running.

To guide you this month, we’ve put together a short list of battery maintenance tips:

  • Remember that overcharging, and undercharging can contribute to the battery’s decay over time. Try to avoid these behaviors as much as possible.
  • Park in a garage over the winter instead of outside, which will keep the engine from getting too cold.
  • Keep the engine clean by removing the clamps and wiping away grease, dirt and oxidation.
  • Make sure your battery is secure in its spot by keeping the battery tray clean and occasionally checking up on its position.
  • And of course – have a professional check out your entire car routinely to spot anything you may have missed.

TEDsters Have Fun on the Toyota i-Road

Toyota recently stormed a TED conference to see what the people prone to think about such things might think about the Toyota i-Road. The response was favorable, to say the least.

The i-Road is a personal mobility vehicle—a vehicle that seeks to a part of the transportation solution rather than being part of the transportation problem. That problem includes issues like emission pollution, hyper-congestion, overcrowding, noise pollution, among many others.

How does the i-Road solve these things? First of all, it does so by being small. You could describe it as Phys.org did, as “a cross between a zippy scooter and an eco-friendly electric car.” It’s all-electric, rides on three wheels (two up front, one in the rear). A three-hour charge will get you 30 miles of range.

The most brilliant aspect of the i-Road is just how fun it is to drive. That’s important with green vehicles because it makes them that much more appealing. Jason Schulz of Toyota Motor Sales USA, who was on-hand for the tests at TED, said, “It is just a total blast to drive. We have seen so many ‘Tedsters’ come out of the car smiling and happy.”
